Monday is for shapes!

Today the older two worked on 5-7 of the Spielgaben worksheets. It was focused on empty space. I had them each get out 12 cubes and we counted them by threes. Something we have been working on. We sing 3,6,9,...etc. to jingle bells almost everyday. So no it wasn't the focus of the lesson but some added learning never hurts.

I had the girls make their empty spaces.

Then we just followed the directions and they did surprisingly well.

I then let them fill their empty space however they wanted.

They got very creative, but they kept wanting to build up, so I challenged them both to try to make shapes and spaces without building up. It was a hard challenge for them.

So just a random side note here is Roo doing her math page. We use Saxon math and LOVE it! I really like how it introduces a new topic and then heavily reviews the old material.

KK was continuing on the letter Cc. We try to do about 4 days of each letter. She got to glue cotton balls on the C, and if you know KK this was a dream come true. She has been obsessed with cotton balls for about two years now.

KK and Buddy worked on shapes today.

These are some of the books we read.  I really like Museum Shapes because it had real art work in it. Also it showed how shapes come together to make things.

After reading the stories, I put this simple house together to show them that a square and triangle can come together to make something, i.e. a house. Our goal today was for Buddy to learn some shapes and KK to recognize and maybe be able to make those shapes.

We used our beloved cotton balls to make triangles.

I showed Buddy that we could make these out of three cotton balls as well.

Here we tried to make shapes with out hands and bodies.

I made a heart for Buddy since it seemed a little advanced for him.

KK and her circle.

We put them together and made a square.

We also made a square out of four cotton balls. Just trying to show them that their are different ways to make the same shapes.

We then put our shapes together to make a house. This was of course KK's favorite.

By this time Buddy was done, so I sent KK on a shape hunt. She found whatever shape I yelled out.

I was impressed she found a rectangle. Over all I think I introduced Buddy to shape names, and KK got a bigger grasps on shapes but I was surprised how hard it was for her to remake the shapes with the cotton balls, we may have to revisit this lesson tomorrow. Its better to have them get it then just finish the lessons.

On an ending note, have you checked out BOB Books? We love them for our beginning readers! Get them from your library today!
